We only really have one cool trip to show for it: Lake Michigan. Other than that, we pass our time at parks and in the back yard weeding, playing in the sand box, trying to grow things and swimming. I will try to post more pics of the other activities some other time. Carmen is nearly five months and as adorable as ever. She laughs, smiles easily, sucks her hands and fingers, snuggles every time she is held, does tummy time exceptionally well and is just cute. Jonas is testing every limit lately with spry attitude and spunk. He learned to make his first drip castle on the shores of Lake Michigan. He loves to swim (with his floaties on) and lately his most favorite things are sticks, balloons and balls. But mostly sticks.

<img style="display:block; I dread doing stuff like that. If blogging didn't require that I get my pics off my camera and on to my computer I would probably blog a lot more. I can't believe Carmen is already 3 months...at the same time, I feel so much older than I did three months ago! I LOVE being a mom of two! But my body feels it. Everyday when I wake up I wonder why my body feels like a combination of getting run over by a semi truck and working out hard(both of which I have not happened) then I remember... I am just experiencing the first three months of parenthood along with chasing a toddler - great combo for being physically exhausted. I am already revisiting the pictures of Carmen in the first few weeks of life just because it is all so hazy! It is hard to appreciate those first few weeks when they fly by and you are in survival mode and then you are trying to still carry on with other things. Anyway, this is what we have been up to since I last blogged...

This is a picture of Carmen on her three month birthday. She has resorted to sucking her two middle fingers since her mommy won't give her the pacifier. Really she won't keep it in, her fingers taste better I guess. Just enjoy it now Carmen because braces are a comin...

Jonas turned 2 years old. He is so much fun. He was delighted to eat ice cream. We ate his favorite meal (hot dogs, peas, macaroni and cheese) and he got to eat ice cream with his two candles on it. He blew out the candles about ten times. Thrilling. Grandma Cox gave him a Thomas DVD and Muppets DVD, Grandma Annie gave him some good winter clothes and Mom and Dad gave him a big blue ball for his birthday! What could be better than that?
Carmen's first smile caught on camera. I asked, "What was that?" (hoping and praying hard that it wasn't what I thought) Todd's reply: I'm sorry! I go out to our front room and my beautiful papi lamp...my favorite thing...was shattered in a thousand pieces all over the carpet! Hear sinking, holding back the tears, hand over my jaw-dropped mouth, I stare wide-eyed and stunned. Get myself together, put Jonas night night, and begin calling my cousins to see if these lamps are still replaceable (I got it in a store we frequent when we go to San Carlos Mexico). Anyway, after helping Todd clean up the pieces I retired what was left of the lamp (the stand) to its graveyard: the garage. It now stands wanting to hold up it's red flower but having empty hands. Jonas is equally touched by my loss. His narrative of what happened has evolved weekly and even daily as follows:

Version 1: "Daddy, lamp, broke."

Version 2: "Daddy broke lamp."

Version 3: "Daddy broke lamp pajamas" (this detail was added since he remembered that the trauma occurred just before bedtime)

Version 4: Daddy broke lamp, mommy cried.

Version 5: Daddy broke lamp. Mommy cried. Sad.

And his latest version: "Daddy broke lamp, carpet." he says as he nods his head.

And with his voice now very soft he then adds, Mommy cried. Sad. Pajamas.

So, Todd and I are both having a hard time getting over the loss of our favorite thing...since Jonas reminds us daily.

My mom and John came to visit for the week. When they came home Todd says, "Em I just couldn't resist". He had bought Jonas his first pair of shoes. Black converse - like father like son. Thirty dollars for a pair of shoes on my son that is not yet two. Jonas was just as excited as Todd because when Todd tried to get him dressed after he had his shoes on Jonas just couldn't sit still and ran all around the house in his new shoes. He thought he really looked funny with only a diaper and shoes. In fact, he thought he was hilarious.

I am starting to enter that phase in which it is hard to remember what life was really like before Carmen. I think that is a good sign of adjustment - or a sign of amnesia from so many sleepless nights. Nonetheless it is here. Jonas has been a little more difficult. I have used the crib for his time-out. I usually take out all the stuffed animals and blankets and put him in the crib - because it is the only contained space in our home. I have decided it isn't such a good idea. He is having way too much fun. When I went to get him out of bed for the day (earlier this week) he had thrown everything out of the crib and while jumping up and down in the crib says "Time out? Chimichanga?" I had put him in time-out nearly a month ago for throwing his chimichanga on the floor.

Carmen Olivia Cox

Carmen Olivia was born March 17, 2010 at 3:49 in the afternoon. I didn't get it with Jonas but with this baby - the phase won't pass! I love it though because I am getting a ton done. I am perfectly content to stay home - clean (deeply) and organize, reorganize, and organize again. I am getting very creative with my new uses of space too! I have got to make room for a baby in our little house AND maintain some room for Jonas to run wild and store his toys. I have just finished putting curtains up in our dining room and our guest room is finally put together in time for my mother-in-law to come and stay. Let's see what else can I do? Seriously, am I going crazy?! I am looking for stuff to clean!

The latest with Jonas:

He said AMEN so loud at church last sunday after the concluding speaker that the whole congregation heard and laughed.

He wants to watch Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day every morning - sometimes twice ... and I let him.

He loves to vacuum with his little vacuum when I vacuum

When I do the dishes he always shouts to ask me if he can "help!"

He still loves his Thomas train that his Aunt Olivia bought him in Arizona. He is also addicted to watching the train crashes on Youtube tht Olivia introduced him to - thanks Liv.

He pushes his baby doll in the pink stroller around the house and even put her down for a nap today in the cradle that is set up in his room for his sister to come.

I am trying to teach him how to answer certain questions. I say, Jonas how old are you or Jonas, what is your name? He usually answers "One" to both unless I coach him on the name. Then he will repeat and say Jonas! The other day I said Jonas what is your name? He said "One!"

No Jonas, what is your NAME?

"Two?" he asks.

After I sing him any song (choo choo song, nursery rhyme, whatever) he says in a really high voice, "yea!"

Well that is about it. Just wanted to write down what he is all about these days so that I can remember it!

There is no better place to be in January than in Arizona! We had a great time. Jonas did very well traveling both ways. And lucky me, I got my flight changed to a direct flight with no additional fees....thank you Detroit weather!! We arrived in sunshine and warmth. We spent just over two weeks seeing all our loved ones and going to the park when we could. Here are just a few pictures from our trip.

Some of my girlfriends threw me a little get together/baby shower. This picture was taken the next day and I think after his third bath... I was really starting to get worried that my son would permanently look like Jack Nicholson as the Joker in Batman. Luckily, it finally came off. Funny thing is that he was doing all of this while we were eating at Somburros. People at other tables kept telling me, "your son is putting lipstick on his face". I would say, "Ya, when the dad's away the kid can play...no worries I'll just wipe it off when I get home". I was enjoying my dinner and company and thrilled that Jonas was entertaining himself. Then I got home and realized it wasn't coming off! Whew, eventually it did though.

Christmas Day....Jonas got a choo choo train...
But he was more interested in eating the ginger bread house...
We are pregnant! In fact, since Todd is usually going "bye-bye" when Todd comes home and tries to give him a hug, Jonas just waves and says "bye-bye". Da-da and bye-bye are synonymous for him. I had to take a picture to capture the fact that yes, Jonas does sometimes cry for his daddy...it is not ALWAYS for mom - thank heavens.

2010 New Years Resolution: To blog about 2009. That way, I can actually meet my goal. Thanksgiving and Christmas wizzed by and now Jonas and I are SO excited to be preparing for a visit in the land of mild and honey (at least in the winter time). That's right - we fly into Phoenix in two days and I am so ready to see the sun shining and maybe even wear some sandals!

But first, lemme meet my new years resolution so that some day when Jonas is old and he wants to see some sign of a mother who was somewhat adapted to "techy" life - I will show him a blog (which will be totally outdated by then). We spent Thanksgiving with one of Todd's classmates from Midwestern University who is doing his residency at the Henry Ford hospital. He and his family were a lot of fun and although I had never met them, it was no big deal. We had a great time visiting and eating delicious food!

Christmas came and went, just like it does every other year. This was our first Christmas alone with just our family and it was nice! Nice and quiet - but nonetheless wonderful to be together and celebrate the blessings in our life.

Todd teaching Jonas how to eat an orange...
We invited Todd's co-resident Yolanda over for Christmas Eve dinner. She was on call so in order to save some time and help her finish earlier (so we could all eat dinner) Todd went to down to the hospital and helped her round on the patients. Yea, they she got to our house and we all ate enchiladas and other "mexican" food and talked all night. It was a lot of fun!
Jonas turned 18mo. so he is finally in nursery! After reading my friend's blog (who lives in Alaska) and her comment about the warm spell they had last week of 19 degrees, I have a new appreciation for the Detroit winter. Last week, we were all sick and on Tamiflu (except for Jonas). Feeling much better now. I stayed home the whole week and now that I am better, and can go outside, I see that the weather dropped 15 degrees. Bye bye 40's hello 20's. Jonas is asserting more and more independence everyday and I am not quite sure how to handle it. He wants to do the dishes all the time (even when there are none to do), climb up on the coffee table and dining room tables, read "choo choo" book all day, and get into everything he knows he shouldn't. The latest struggle is getting him to sit in his high chair and eat rather than stand up and sit on the tray. We got our first Christmas tree (fake but nonetheless pre-lit and perfect) and decorated it last night. I feel pretty good about my yard sale ornaments that I got a few months ago, figuring we'd have a tree in our lifetime, eventually. And now that we actually live in a space big enough for a tree - wha-la! It is really cool! I took Jonas to Value World yesterday since we have NO toys for him. He got a play vaccuum, and seasame street train. I got a wreath for the door...all for a total of 5 dollars! Love thrift stores. Okay, enough bragging about my good deals. This was an entry to post whatever was on my mind (since I rarely know what to say on these blogs). If no one reads it...at least I will know what was on my mind on December 8, 2009!

Oh, and I want to list all the words I can think of in Jonas's vocabulary:

1.Mama

2.Dada

3.Andrew

4.Olivia

5.Nana

6.apple

7.Paci (pacifier)

8. teddy

9.bye

10.hi

11.book

12.choo -choo

13.home

14.out

15.up

16.down

17.no

18.yes

20.thank you

21.please

22.puppy

21.shh

24.ball

25.egg

26.cracker

27. cookie

28.juice

29.milk

30.water

31.more

32.eat

33.store

34.wow!

35. okay

36. poo

37. cold

38. hot

39. night

40. sun

41. moon

42. moo

43. meow

44. cat

45. doggie

46. row-row

47. quack

48. duck

49. cow

50. moo

51. car

52. horse

53. sheep

54. boo

55. walk

56. bath

57. shower

58. help

59. dishes

60. And if for nothing else, I will try to start blogging again for family history purposes....if that makes sense. I always thought that I didn't blog much before because work took up all my time. Then I quit work, moved to Michigan, and three months later I am FINALLY updating this blog. Since the most interesting things about blogs are the pictures. I will post a few of what has been going on since last January when I posted my last blog.

Todd graduated on June 5th! What a great day! We had a fun party afterwards with his friends and family

Five days after he graduated, he left with the moving van, corolla, and my dad to make the trek out east to Michigan. Meanwhile I stayed behind a few days and then flew back with Jonas. And we celebrated his 1st birthday with all his many girlfriends. He loved the cake the best that my friend Michelle Tarwarter made for him. He dove right into it. And with the sugar high...he stayed up until 11 pm hyper and excited as ever.

Just hangin in his high chair.

Mom Jeans

So my sister and I sometimes joke about how we'll need to start wearing "mom jeans" since we had kids. There is that pooch that just wasn't really there before and does noe seem to be going anywhere very fast - you know that deflated balloon pooch. Well, the other day it all became painfully obvious how this isn't really a joke - I really am in need of some "mom jeans".

The story all starts with my most favorite jeans in the picture below:

I have finally come to the point where I need to retire these - my most favorite jeans. They have holes in both legs and on the back and the pockets. I have worn them for the last four years and lOVED them. They are so soft from all the wear..and they fit just right. So, I decided to just go back to the same store and get the same jeans again. SO I am in this store dressing room looking in the mirror at the jeans that I tried on and decide that they'll do - until the sales clerk asks, "So how do you like them?". I reply that they are fine and ask her what she thinks. She says, "I think they look good. Have you tried the 'boyfriend's favorite' style?"

-"No, what is the difference between those and these type of jeans?" I ask

-"Oh, you know, they are mostly the same, they just don't flare as much on the legs and come up a little higher on the waist...you know, just a little more mom jeansish" said the clerk.

Now, let me add the detail that I happened to be wearing NO wedding ring and did not have a trace of Jonas with me! It makes her reply even more painfully honest!

IT IS OFFICIAL - I have entered the phase of life where I have to wear MOM JEANS...because I am "not just a woman - I'm a Mom"!!

I will post a picture of my old jean - how I miss them....

Changes with 2009

So I think 2009 will be the year of changes. To welcome in the change...I got a haircut. To be honest, it's way shorter than I expected. I was shocked - at first. You know the initial shock at the salon when the hairstylist asks you if you like it and you hurry out a "Yea it's great!" and inside think (just get out of here before I start crying)! I rush out to my car and and can't hold back the laughs! I laugh because I can't cry. This is so funny to me! Why? I think I laugh, honestly because I can't wait to see my husband's reaction. He would love for me to return from the salon with with thick, long, shiny, dark brown hair - a miracle that won't ever happen until the next life. So, I hurry home rush in the house and say with a wry smile, "Do you like it?"

...the look of shock on his face was priceless. My response....more laughing. His response, "You're gonna get your money back right? You didn't actually pay for that?"

my response...more laughing. I laughed and laughed.

If I get this much satisfaction from horrifying my hubby - what will I do next. My humor is so sick.

P.S. The picture below is 2-3 weeks post haircut. After three months of traveling, Todd is home as of Thanksgiving Day, and so is the MAC that I blog on and have pictures. So where do I begin to catch up over the last four months?! Jonas has changed so much. He is adorable! . He got all of his crying out in July and August and is finally here and ready to show off his personality! There are way too many pictures to post of him (we are the typically first time parents (snap happy camera freaks). I am sure we have enough pictures to have frames for a lengthy movie titled "Jonas in the Bath" or "Jonas on the floor" or "Jonas doing nothing". Each would be equally entertaining.

However, I thought I would take some of the favorites and post them. This was in September. This is when I decided it was time to stop holding him and start doing more tummy time. He had obviously never seen grass or this perspective of the world...
Todd finally came home on Thanksgiving....

Summer Highlights

lunch with his grandma cox...

One of my favorite highlights of summer was hiking in Utah. When he left, his son was a calm, peaceful, quiet baby. When he returned, he wondered what child I had traded him for in Utah. As you can tell the subsequent 3-4 four weeks, Jonas's personality was a thriving, determined, opinionated particular baby. I think my adrenaline has finally ran out - because Jonas's schedule is killing me! I think he eats his weight in breastmilk every day! He is a chomper! Todd left for Detroit two days ago for the month of July. So it is just me and Jonas now...we are quite a pair! My day usually goes like this: bedtime at midnight, wake up at 2:00am, bed at 3:00, wake up at 5:00 and bring Jonas to my bed where we then sleep together until about 8:00 a.m. Then around 8:30 a.m. his little grunting noises finally pull me out of the deepest sleep and I change his diaper and he eats off and on ( he is a snacker) until around 10:30 a.m. eventually he goes to sleep about 11:30 a.m. and wakes up around 2:00 p.m. SO that is my life in a nutshell...meeting little Jonas' every need. He is the cutest. Olivia, my sister is a huge help. I call her the baby whisperer. She comes home around five and is able to calm him down even when he is in the most dreadful mood and screaming (not that it happens a lot right now...I am crossing my fingers).

The Windy City

Last weekend we went to Chicago......
We decided that we should take one last hurrah trip before we had to buckle down and be parents. I have always wanted to see the city and some of Todd's best friends live there: Ryan and Julie Hobbs. So it worked out perfectly - visiting friends and seeing the sights together. The first day we went to a Cubs game - they lost, but it was still good times! Wow, Wrigley Field has a spirit about it that pales to any corporate huge Chase Field Stadium like the D-Backs. Anyway, later on we saw Wicked and LOVED IT. The rest of the time we spent seeing the sights and walking among the work of the master's in the Chicago Museum of Fine Art. Ryan and Julie showed us a fabulous time. Julie is four weeks further along in her pregnancy - so she was a trooper to do all the walking that she did. I'll post a picture of the four of us below:
